The challenge

Fresh food for 8,000 miles...

The two intrepid rowers spent nearly six months in 2025 battling relentless Pacific swells over a gruelling crossing of over 8,000 nautical miles, breaking 5 world records between them. Their challenge to us: Create an on-board unit, that can sustain a reliable supply of nutritious leaves and microgreens, ensuring they had an element of fresh food for their journey, from start to finish. Even when they were thousands of miles from land...

We delivered on our promise and our grow unit helped power them across the Pacific to 5 world records. We salute these incredible women!

Meet the Team

Miriam Payne

Miriam Payne

Miriam Payne, from a landlocked area of Yorkshire, hadn't been at sea until she rowed the Atlantic solo in 2022 in record time. With a degree in Physics with Astrophysics, she found she didn't quite have the temperament for academia so has since embarked on a life of adventure. Growing up on the family farm, she thrived in the outdoors. In college she climbed Mount Kilimanjaro, sparking her passion for adventurous exploits.

Jess Rowe

Jess Rowe

Jess Rowe, from Hampshire, is an adventurer passionate about the outdoors. She's rowed the Atlantic, hiked England's South West Coast Path, climbed Mount Kenya, and cycled across Spain. Jess has spent over seven years working in the yachting industry on both motor and sailing yachts globally and worked in Chichester in the lead up to the Pacific row helping to support navigation on superyachts.

The Story of the Invention

In under eight weeks, we designed and built a solar-powered growing system able to withstand the unforgiving environment of the open ocean and ensure a steady supply of fresh greens for the adventurers. Perfectly aligned with our own mission - to reimagine global food production, wherever you are in the world.

    Everything starts with a sketch

Everything starts with a sketch - early whiteboard sessions helped map out the core functionality and form factor.

  2. 02
    From sketch to prototype

From sketch to prototype - we mocked up a rough scale model to quickly test proportions, access points, and usability.

  3. 03
    Detailed CAD model

Once we were confident in the design choices, we translated them into a detailed CAD model, ready for precision engineering and stress testing!

  4. 04
    Prototype build

With less than 8 weeks to design, build and manufacture the unit. We looked to our build partners and ex-Dyson production team to bring the prototype to life.

  5. 05
    Testing the unit

We tested the unit under varying conditions to ensure that when in place, Jess and Miriam can rely on it to supply the freshest of nutritious greens, with minimal fuss

  6. 06
    Prototype demo

Prototype in hand, we demoed the unit to walk through the key features and functionality, collecting real-time feedback from the team before moving to final build.

  7. 07
    Prototype secured to the boat

Shipped on time and secured to the boat. Our first off-grid unit is about to set sail on the 7,000 mile journey!
